Biography :
Maia Chankseliani is Associate Professor of Comparative and International Education at the Department of Education and a Fellow of St Edmund Hall.
She brings to this role experience of education research, teaching, policy-making, management, and consultancy in different international contexts.
Maia completed her BA in English Philology at Tbilisi State University in her native Georgia. Following a few years of teaching and adult education management at a local non-profit, she moved to the United States to study at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. Maia later returned to Georgia to lead the vocational education and training sector at the Ministry of Education and Science. The policy-making career in a developing country context involved close collaborations with education and training providers, professional associations, trade unions, donor communities, as well as learners of different age groups. Professional experiences of teaching, working in the non-profit and government sectors helped Maia realise that academic research and teaching interested her most. This decision led her to the University of Cambridge where she completed her PhD under the supervision of Christopher Colclough on geographic inequalities in university access in post-Soviet Georgia.
At different times, Maia worked on research and consultancy assignments with non-profit, for-profit and international organisations to examine, amongst other issues, student mobility from post-Soviet countries to the EU/UK; public-private partnerships in education in Africa; apprenticeships policies and systems in Europe, Asia, Africa, and Australia; skills competitions, entrepreneurship, and private training provision in the UK; teacher educators’ professional development in Pakistan; labour market demand in Georgia; civil service modernisation in Kazakhstan; and child labour in Ghana.
Maia Chankseliani is on the editorial boards of the following journals: Compare: A Journal of Comparative and International Education, Research in Comparative and International Education, and Cambridge Journal of Eurasian Studies.
