DESCRIPTION:

Tourism can play a key role in promoting sustainable mountain development, as it can provide an important source of income and employment for local communities. However, it can also negatively impact the environment, disrupt traditional livelihoods, and alter local cultures. It is therefore necessary to ensure that tourism is compatible with traditional livelihoods and supports sustainable mountain development. To achieve this, striking a balance between innovation and tradition, by combining modern tourism development approaches with traditional mountain livelihoods and cultural practices is crucial. This can help to promote the unique character and cultural heritage of mountain areas, while also providing economic benefits for local communities.

The focus of the plenary session is to use the information obtained from scientific research to facilitate climate change adaptation on a national and global level in conjunction with the development of the tourism sector as the key livelihood option for the communities. We invite international and local experts, scientists, governmental representatives, and practitioners from the Caucasus, Carpathian, and Alpine regions to embark on a debate about the important themes discussed in this session.
